Establishing a Handicap

To play in the league you must have a handicap. You are responsible for entering your scores each week. You can enter scores for rounds played at any course, either 9 or 18 holes. You must log five 18 hole rounds to establish a handicap.

Your league fee includes the annual handicap fee. If you’re not sure what your GHIN number is contact Bob Carey, Head Professional at Fresh Pond Golf Course. Phone: 617-349-6282, 617-349-6964.

Equitable Stroke Control

Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a player’s potential ability. ESC sets a maximum number that a player can post on any hole depending on the player’s Course Handicap. ESC is used only when a player’s actual or most likely score exceeds the player’s maximum number based on the table below

18 Hole Course
Handicap Maximum Number Posted On Any Hole
9 or Less 6
10-19 7
20-29 8
30-39 9

How we calculate your Handicap

We use 9-hole handicaps adjusted for Fresh Pond using this method

  1. Halve a player’s USGA Handicap
  2. Round up to the nearest tenth
  3. Convert it to a nine-hole Course Handicap using Fresh Pond’s nine-hole Slope Rating with the formula:
USGA Handicap * 122 (Fresh Pond Slope) / 113 (USGA Slope)
  4. Round to nearest whole number

A player’s USGA Handicap is 23.7, her nine-hole Fresh Pond Handicap is 13

  1. 23.7 ÷ 2 = 11.85
  2. round up to nearest tenth = 11.9
  3. Convert to nine-hole Course Handicap 11.9 * 122/113 = 12.84
  4. round to nearest whole number = 13
